INDONESIA - Conference will examine mining industry E-mail

A conference titled "Re-Invigorating Indonesian Mining - Let"s Look Ahead" will be held at Jakarta International Expo Kemayoran from October 31 to November 1 hosted by Indonesian Mining Association and organized by PT Pamerindo Buana Abadi (PBA).

In conjunction and at the same venue PBA has also organized the 13th International Mining and Minerals Recovery Exhibition 2007 from October 31 to November 3.

The conference is aimed at addressing the issue that although Indonesia is a developing country it is facing stagnant or even decreased growth in the mining industry.

The conference will also look at regulations which are a cause for concern in the mining industry, especially forestry, environment, mining bill and taxation while there is also some confusion in the implementation of regional autonomy.

Among the issues to be discussed within the regulations framework is the Indonesian Government's role in facilitating greater certainty and consistency by reducing duplication, overlap between and within jurisdictions, minimizing distortions due to different approaches in different jurisdictions, reducing disputes between levels of government, and facilitating resolution of issues that cross local government borders.

Indonesian mining activities can be vigorous if they receive full favourable attention from all stakeholders, strong political will as well as commitment from the central and local governments, and also from the politicians, NGOs and universities.

It has now become crucial for Indonesia's investment regime to be internationally competitive.

The conference is also aimed at encouraging mining investment, identifying present and future challenges, providing an important and timely forum to discuss the prospects of the industry, and facilitating professional discussions between all parties involved and interested in the mining industry.
