The 2007 China International Nonferrous Metals Market Conference will be held in Hong Kong from May 29-31. The ASIA Miner editor Yolanda Torrisi will be at the conference to meet delegates and report on the presentations.

The 2007 China International Nonferrous Metals Market Conference will give delegates from around the world the chance to meet their counterparts from China. It will examine and discuss challenges and change in China, and put this in the global context.

The Chinese economy maintained rapid and stable growth during 2006 with gross domestic product (GDP) surging 10.7% and breaking through RMB20,000 billion.

The booming economy drives the demand for raw materials including nonferrous metals and China has been the number one nonferrous metals producer and consumer in the world for five consecutive years.

China's total consumption of main base metals was nearly 19 million tonnes in 2006, an increase of 18.7%, and total output of 10 nonferrous metals jumped 17% to 19 million tonnes.

Due to the mushrooming demand and fund speculation, main nonferrous metals prices repeatedly set new highs in 2006. This brings huge profits to miners and mining becomes more attractive but also strikes downstream fabricators to some extent.

The strong growth begs a number of questions:

Where does the Chinese nonferrous metals industry go in the future considering that Chinese government continues to strengthen macro control and exports as well as promoting the industry structure adjustment?

Will nonferrous metals prices make new records?

How will the harmonious development of the various nonferrous metals industrial chains be sustained?

What opportunities will be available to the nonferrous metals industry with the further development of Chinese economy in the 11th Five Year period?

How do China's future resources strategy, macro control policies, foreign trade policies and recycling economy affect the nonferrous metals industry?

Those questions will be answered at the 2007 China International Nonferrous Metals Market Conference in Hong Kong from May 29-31.

Officials from the National Reform and Development Commission (NDRC), Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration and CNI-A will attend the conference along with more than 500 other nonferrous metals industry executives from around the globe.
