A book written by Indian engineering and mine planning expert Dr Jayanta Bhattacharya discusses the elements of modern mine planning while emphasizing the need for their integration in the minerals business.

The new edition of Principles of Mine Planning covers all topics relating to mine planning and incorporates corporate governance, sound economics, concerns for the environment and social responsibility.

The new edition also introduces engineering and management areas related to the minerals industry, including risk assessment in mining investment, project management and control, IT-enabled strategic planning, supply chain management, PERT, CPM and CCPM. It also adds a new appendix on due diligence. Seven new chapters have been added from the first edition.

All chapters contain clear illustrations, case studies and examples, and feasible examples for improved understanding on modern and next-generational aspects of mine planning.

The book would be useful as a textbook for diploma, graduate and post graduate students of mining and geo-resources engineering and business, and as a reference for teachers, researchers and professionals.

After obtaining his B Tech and M Tech degrees from the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, Dr Bhattacharya joined the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1987 where he obtained his Ph D in Engineering, specializing in reliability engineering and mine system planning. He is now a Professor in the Department of Mining Engineering and Centre of Educational Technology in the same institute.

Dr Bhattacharya has made pioneering contributions in the field of research and education related to quality and reliability engineering, algorithm development, and bio-remediation and treatment of acid mine and industrial effluents.

He has more than 100 research papers in journals and proceedings. He has four other books to his credit: ‘Quality Control and Management: Methods and Practices in the Mineral Industries’, ‘Global Corporate Environmentalism’, ‘Disruptive Innovation: Strategies for Enterprise Growth’, and ‘Corporate Social Responsibility: Ethical and Strategic Choice’.
