A 12-month trial of lining pipes with FLSmidth Ludowici’s wear resistant compound has proven it will significantly extend the life of the pipe. The trial took place at the Sonoma coal mine in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, which produces high-quality coking and thermal coal.

The trial began in July 2011 with two 300NB x 6000 pipes lined with 12mm of FLSmidth Ludowici WEAR-RESIST compound which was centrifugally cast into the co-disposal tailing lines.

Global engineering firm Sedgman approached FLSmidth Ludowici to use its compound in the trial in a bid to extend the wear life of pipes throughout many of their coal preparation plants.

WEAR-RESIST is an alumina-based ceramic bead encapsulated in epoxy resin, which has been used successfully during the last 15 years in co-disposal pipes at the Jeebropilly mine on the Moreton field. The Jeebropilly experience added confidence to the Sonoma trial. The pipes in the trial were on a six-week rotation and despite the highly abrasive operating conditions, showed an increased lifespan.

Sedgman’s project leader Alan Ainsworth says “The steel pipe wore at a rate of around 0.5mm per week while the pipe with wear resist in place still had continuity through the pipe wear indicators. About 600,000 tonnes of plant reject passed through those pipes over the test period.”

FLSmidth Ludowici product specialist, wear surfaces, Peter Carseldine, says providing the pipes free of charge for the trial proved to be a good investment. “We are keen to expand the areas where WEAR-RESIST can be employed to increase the life of pipe installations. With the apparent successes of these trials in the co-disposal application and the proven success of lining paste backfill lines with WEAR-RESIST, we look forward to moving forward and extending WEAR-RESIST’s use in the future.”
