Orica has been selected by Glencore for a five-year explosives technology and services contract for the producer’s copper and zinc operations in Australia.
The new agreement, effective January 2021, includes the McArthur River mine in the Northern Territory, the Lady Loretta mine in Queensland, the Mount Isa mines in Queensland, the Ernest Henry operation in Queensland, and the CSA mine in New South Wales.
Orica already has an existing supply deal with Glencore for its nickel and cobalt operations at Murrin Murrin in Western Australia.
Under the contract’s terms, Orica will deliver its full suite of explosives technology and blasting services, including what it is calling the world’s first fully wireless initiating system, WebGen, the BlastIQ digital blast optimisation suite of products, and smart explosives delivery system Bulkmaster 7.
“Glencore’s Ernest Henry mine in northwest Queensland was the first site in the world to trial and adopt our wireless explosives technology, WebGen,” said Orica CEO Alberto Calderon.
“This deal shows Glencore’s confidence in our technology roadmap as well as aligning with their strategic vision for technology to deliver added value to their operations.”
