Indian natural resources company Vedanta Ltd has placed a copper smelter complex in the southern Tamil Nadu state for sale, reported Reuters. The smelter has been closed since May 2018 after 13 people were killed while protesting the operation for alleged pollution.
Located in the port city of Thoothukudi, the copper smelter was operated by Stelite Copper, a Vedanta unit. It has an installed capacity of 400,000 tonnes per annum.
Prospective buyers have until 4 July to submit expressions of interest.
Vedanta said in March that it was searching for a state government partner to set up a new copper smelter close to a port. However, it is unclear if the proposal received any interest, Reuters said.
