FLSmidth recently confirmed that its carbon emission reduction targets – highlighted by a goal to reach carbon neutrality by the year 2030 – under its MissionZero program have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.

By implementing its plan to achieve its goals, the company said it will help keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius and also deliver solutions that will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 10%.

The sustainability initiative was first announced by FLSmidth in November 2019 under the definitions of its MissionZero program. 

The Science Based Targets cover the company’s emissions throughout the value chain, from operations to supply chain as well as from its customers – the latter accounting for about 95% of its emissions.

As outlined in the Science Based Targets pledge, FLSmidth will by 2030 be carbon-neutral in its own operations; have 30% of its spend with suppliers with similar decarbonisation targets; and cut customer-associated emissions per revenue by 56%, or 7% year on year.

To achieve the Science Based Targets, FLSmidth said it will work in partnership with customers to improve their sustainability performance with its solutions; accelerate investment in sustainability-related R&D and engage in strategic industry and university partnerships around the world to develop new solutions; and invest in renewable energy for its own operations.

“By setting these targets, we commit to deliver solutions to our customers to reduce emissions,” said FLSmidth CEO Thomas Schulz.

“We’ve already communicated strong sustainability ambitions through the MissionZero program and, with our Science Based Targets commitment, we will further accelerate these and get a clear picture on how we’re progressing with our MissionZero goals, by having specific numbers on reductions to commit to and meet year on year.”

He also stressed that many of FLSmidth’s customers have set carbon neutrality targets for 2050; in order to achieve those, its solutions need to be available already by 2030.

“Finally, our carbon neutrality ambition for our own operations by 2030 will ensure that we ‘walk the talk’ internally as well,” added Schulz.
